For most Nepali D2C brands, social media is not a marketing channel. It is the shop front, the catalogue and the customer service desk at once. That works remarkably well up to a point, and then becomes the thing holding the brand back. Here is how the good ones use it, and where they stop relying on it.
What is actually working
Short video over polished photography
Reels and TikTok reward showing rather than styling. Making the product, packing an order, the honest before-and-after — these consistently outperform studio images, cost less, and are far more believable.
Showing the person behind the brand
Nepali buyers respond to knowing who they are buying from. Founders who appear on camera and answer their own comments build trust faster than any ad, particularly for a brand nobody has heard of.
Small creators over big names
Micro-influencers with an engaged local following usually deliver better return than a large account with a broad one. Paying in product plus a modest fee is common, and the audience overlap is tighter.
Comments and DMs as the sales floor
A large share of orders still begins as a message. Speed of reply is effectively your conversion rate — a two-hour response often loses to a competitor who answered in ten minutes.
Festival timing
Dashain and Tihar campaigns planned weeks ahead, with stock ready, outperform everything else in the year. The brands that win them decided in Bhadra, not the week before.
Where it stops working
- You do not own the audience. A reach change or a lost account can remove your entire customer base overnight.
- DM ordering does not scale. Beyond a certain volume, orders in chat threads get missed, mispriced and forgotten.
- No search presence. Social reaches people scrolling; it does not reach people actively searching to buy.
- Rising ad costs as more brands compete for the same feed.
What the brands that last do differently
- Move the transaction to their own store, while keeping discovery social. Social gets the attention; the store takes the order properly, with stock, pricing and a record.
- Collect contact details so they can reach buyers without paying for reach again.
- Publish content that answers search queries, so they exist for people at the point of intent.
- Funnel every channel into one order list, so a DM order and a website order are handled identically.
The short version
Social media is the best discovery engine available to a Nepali D2C brand — short video, a visible founder, small creators, fast replies and festival planning. Just do not let it stay the whole business: own the transaction, own the customer list, and be findable in search as well as in feeds.
